  • Anal grooves surround the anus posteriorly
  • Usually of small size
  • Scutum inornate and without eyes, and in the female without lateral grooves
  • Capitulum with base sub-rectangular, and with palps normally short and conical, broadest near the posterior end of article 2, (in some species projects laterally beyond the base)
  • The second and third palpal segments taper anteriorly so that the capitulum anterior to the basis capitulum appears to be triangular
  • There are no eyes in either sex
  • Festoons are present
  • They are generally three-host ticks.
